International Joke Day

On July 1st, International Joke Day is celebrated as the light-hearted occasion, which is dedicated to the heart of humour and laughter. The day is to bring joy and celebrate the laughter together, abiding by the saying “laughter is the best medicine”, what would we be without laughter?

Humour has an important place in our lives, keeping stress at bay, building relationships, and bringing frivolity to the seriousness of life. People with dementia often face stress and confusion in their daily lives. Humour can provide a much-needed break from these challenges. Laughter releases endorphins in the body, which can help to reduce stress and improve overall mood and humour, which can also help to stimulate memory and cognitive function.

That’s exactly what our residents enjoyed when short jokes were read out to them, much laughter abounded amongst the group. Residents Irene and John also read out some jokes to the group from one of our many books. Everyone agreed it was a very entertaining afternoon that brought much fun and laughter.
